Dare I suppose that, when the Great Spotted Fleet invites its host to dine aboard in reciprocity, the dish most often served us that famous English meal, spotted dick...

Alas, the Great Spotted Fleet is almost back to its home port in the ROD. I apologize for not posting much information here, but there are daily blog entries on the ROD website: http://6mmrod.webstarts.com

We do have several new ships coming on line soon that would like to pay a visit to these fine ports of call, including the ROD's first hospital ship!

The Great Spotted Fleet has finally returned home! After 85 days and 53 port calls the fleet has returned to Naval Station Saint Catherine Bay (NSSC) to much fanfare and celebration. With so many ships to dock, it is taking most of the day to get the ships berthed and the crews disembarked. Local authorities are on high alert for the large number of sailors that will be flooding the local bars and restaurants tonight.

The return to port was largely without mishap, although there was a minor incident early this morning when 2 squadrons of F-18s from NSSC flew out to greet the fleet and welcome them home. Several of the ships took the ROD fighters for a final tactical exercise and the carrier Fury launched her fighters to intercept them. The crews were cursing Old Salty Dave and his tricks, but Old Salty Dave was just sitting on the bridge of his battleship laughing and watching the dogfight while he sipped his coffee.

Overall the Great Spotted Fleet appears to have been a great success. Not only did the ROD fleet visit many ports of call and open up dialogue with many countries, but they did it all with no fatalities, no lost ships or aircraft, and a very reasonable rate of STDs and alcohol-related personal injuries.

The ROD launched Operation Dandelion recently. It is on the ROD website and we intend to make more postings about this crisis as it unfolds. Here is the Operations Order:

Operation Dandelion

Situation: Tensions between the Kingdom of Mahishmati and the Evil Empire are high. Disputes between the two nations over the exact location of the border has been an ongoing problem, but recent imperial incursions into fertile farming land that is clearly in Mahishmatian territory have resulted in several skirmishes between armed citizens from both countries. Military forces from both sides have rushed to the region, but the military strength of the Evil Empire is much greater than that of Mahishmati.

Imperial Air Force aircraft have been blatantly flying through Mahishmati air space and small infantry patrols from the Imperial Army have been spotted in Mahishmati territory as well. The RODís support of Mahishmati has drawn the ire of the Evil Empire, and recent visits by ROD warships and combat aircraft have only increased tensions.

Mission: The ROD deploys combat and support units to the Kingdom of Mahishmati in order to protect Mahishmati territory and air space. On Order, ROD forces conduct offensive operations against the Evil Empire to defeat forces that threaten the Kingdom of Mahishmati.

Today's Update:

Yesterday afternoon, aircraft from the RODís 2nd Fighter Squadron (F-4Es) flying a joint patrol with F-105s from the Mahishmati Air Force intercepted a flight of Mig-29s from the Imperial Air Force inside of Mahishmati air space. The encounter was tense, but after some maneuvering the Imperial aircraft departed the area without any shots being fired.

This morning, ships carrying the vehicles of the RODís 2nd Armored Brigade made port and began offloading. The first wave of charter aircraft carrying personnel of the brigade are on the ground to begin unloading and marshalling of equipment. Additional flights are arriving every day. The movement control team estimates that all ground forces will be in-country and in tactical assembly areas by Thursday, May 17th.

ROD naval ships have arrived in the Bay of Bengal. Carrier Battle Group 8, with the carrier Armageddon, is preparing to deploy from the ROD.

Imperial response to the RODís deployment has been both verbal and substantive. Increases in Imperial rhetoric and threats against both Mahishmati and the ROD have coincided with additional deployments of Imperial Army and Navy units. Several attack and guided missile submarines have deployed to the Bay of Bengal and adjacent waters, along with a handful of surface combatants and support ships. Perhaps most concerning is the movement of one of the Evil Empireís elite armored regiments to the border. Tank Regiment Diablo departed its garrison base and is currently in an assembly area only 10km from the border with Mahishmati. A motor rifle battalion from Infantry Regiment Havoc is already positioned along the border, but intelligence suggests that the remainder of the regiment is preparing to deploy as well, along with additional artillery and air defense units.

The rumors of a submarine from the Commonwealth were not accurate. It was rumored that an attack sub was in the Indian Ocean. There was not an SSN. It turns out that the SSBN Georgia was cruising in the Indian Ocean going around Africa. So the Commonwealth boomers do not transit the Suez ** CENSORED **.
.
The task force that was in the Med is not in the western Indian Ocean, passing Saudi Arabia It includes supply ship, hospital ship and several frigates. It is planned that the task force will participate in relef effort in the Bay of Bengal Zone.
.
The UIN Security Council is meeting to discuess the situation. There is a good deal of posturing for political gains on the world stage.

The RODís 2nd Armored Brigade has completed itís move from the port of Parushabutr to assembly areas and forward operating bases near the contested border with the Evil Empire. The ROD Army now has roughly 4,000 personnel in Mahishmati consisting of the 2nd Armored Brigade, the 15th Parachute Infantry Battalion, the 25th Combat Support Hospital, and the 21st Transportation Battalion.

Air support still consists of two fighter squadrons (F-4E and F-16C). Naval support currently consists of a surface battle group, but a carrier battle group will arrive soon.

Maneuver battalions from the Dragon Brigade have begun to aggressively patrol the disputed area, often coming face-to-face with patrols from the Empireís Diablo Regiment. This morning a patrol the 5th Tank Battalion ran into an Imperial road block and a tense standoff ensued. Nether side was willing to budge for nearly 15 minutes until 2 ROD Cobra gunships arrived, unnerving the Imperial troops. They withdrew and Mahishmati troops arrived to clear the obstacles and the ROD armor continued its patrol.

Pictured below is FOB Razorback Ė a forward operating base occupied by the 5th Tank Battalion. Shown here is the area occupied by the battalionís Headquarters and B Companies.

The Evil Empire has responded to increased ROD patrols by stepping up the tempo of their own patrols. Imperial forces are becoming increasingly aggressive in their meetings with the ROD, not only on the ground in the disputed border region, but also in the air and at sea. Combat aircraft ae maneuvering dangerously close to one another at a time when tensions are high and aircraft are armed to the teeth. In addition, the Imperial Navy has rushed more ships to the Bay of Bengal: several destroyers, attack submarines, and even a pair of guided missile submarines.

The RODís Carrier Battle Group 8 will arrive in the Bay of Bengal tomorrow morning. There are already a lot of hostile warships in a very small area. While the Kingdom of Mahishmati and the Evil Empire are increasing their rhetoric, the worldís leaders are appealing for calm and patience.

Carrier Battle Group 8 consists of the aircraft carrier Armageddon, the Adams class destroyer Halberd, the Spruance class destroyers Lance and Rocket, the Sacramento class fast support ship Cougar, and the Thresher class attack submarine Piranha. They will be joining Surface Battle Group 11 which consists of the Iowa class battleship Fenris, The Arleigh Burke class destroyers Musket, Battle Axe, and Broadsword, the Spruance class destroyer Kukri, and the Sacramento class fast support ship Impala. There are also three ROD submarines in the area.

The conflict in Mahishati took a dangerous new turn today when artillery fire was exchanged between the ROD and the Evil Empire. An Imperial spokesperson this afternoon announced that one of its patrols had ben fired upon by a patrol from the Mahishmati Army, and that the Imperial troops had to retreat and use defensive mortar fire to cover their withdrawal. However, the ROD has two Q-36 Firefinder radars in the area and one of these radars was able to track the incoming mortar rounds. The mortar fire was directed toward a Mahishmati checkpoint and it originated in the disputed border zone.

The radar data was immediately forward to the 18th Artillery Battalion and 2nd platoon / B Battery fired a platoon-4 counterfire mission within 3 minutes of the mortar roundsí impact. The Evil Empire decried this ROD counterfire mission as an act of war and promised swift retribution.

This morning in the pre-dawn darkness, ROD warships were patrolling off the Mahishmati coast and escorting cargo ships carrying ROD supplies and equipment into the harbor at Paruchabutr. The Spruance class destroyer Kukri observed a small craft in the entrance to the harbor, and a drone with night vision capability confirmed that the small craft was deploying mines. The Kukri immediately fired on the craft with its 5-inch guns, sinking it with several direct hits.

Within 10 minutes several Imperial aircraft approached the Kukri, attacking with anti-ship missiles. As other warships and ROD aircraft rushed to the area, the Kukri returned fire with surface to air missiles. In what appears to be a coordinated attack, an Imperial submarine launched several anti-ship missiles at the Kukri from another direction. The ROD crew employed all of their counter measures, to include the Phalanx CIWS, but the sea whiz was overwhelmed by the number of inbound missiles. The Kukri was struck by two missiles forward on the port side, and by a third missile amidships on the starboard side.

The Arleigh Burke class destroyer Broadsword pulled alongside the stricken Kukri to assist with firefighting, but the ship began to list heavily to port and after 20 minutes the crew was ordered to abandon ship. The Broadsword picked up survivors while the rest of the ROD fleet hunted the Imperial submarine. The Imperial aircraft withdrew after the attack.

As soon as the ROD commander received word of the attack at his command post, he issued the order to execute pre-planned attacks on Imperial units. F-4Es and F-16Cs from the RODís 1st Fighter Wing, along with F-105s from the Mahishmati air force, were airborne just as the sun was rising and the Kukri was slipping beneath the waves. At the same time, ROD and Mahishmati artillery fired pre-planned, though unobserved, barrages across the disputed zone, striking road junctions and known supply points to disrupt Imperial troop movements. The 11th Tank Battalion was already in the disputed zone in armor patrol bases, and within minutes they were rolling into a spoiling attack to throw the Diablo Regiment off balance.

The Battle of Dog Run occurred several days ago in north-eastern Mahishmati, but details are just now being publicized due to the nature of the operation and the relative isolation of the region.

The Dog Run is a long, narrow valley running north Ė south in the disputed border region of Mahishmati. ROD 2nd Armored Brigade made a bold move through the valley in an attempt to encircle the Evil Empireís Diablo Tank Regiment. Ironically, the Diablo Regiment had the same general idea. The ROD 11th Tank Battalion was in the lead and they were exiting the northern end of Dog Run when they ran headlong into a tank battalion from Diablo. A short-range tank battle ensued, and both forces attempted to reinforce. A second Diablo tank battalion, reinforced by mech infantry, approached Dog Run from the east, gaining the ridgeline above the valley. Shortly thereafter the RODís 5th Tank Battalion made contact with them from inside the Dog Run.

5th Tank Battalion counterattacked, fighting uphill into the teeth of the Diablo tanks. 5th Tankís mortar platoon fired until they were completely out of ammunition, and then 7th Infantry Battalionís mortars fired until they were dangerously low on ammunition as well. The mortars were supported by artillery from the brigadeís 155mm howitzer battalion which destroyed Diablo tanks in addition to firing multiple SEAD missions (suppression of enemy air defenses), hitting Imperial air defense units, thus enabling ROD and Mahismati aircraft to provide fixed-wing and rotary-wing close air support.

At the end of the day, the Dragon Brigade prevailed, pushing the Diablo Regiment back north of the disputed border region, destroying 2 Diablo tank battalions, an artillery battalion, and crippling the mech infantry in the process. They did suffer significant casualties during the battle, with 11th and 5th tank battalions reduced to 70% and 80% strength respectively.

2nd Armored Brigade is currently occupying defensive positions in the vicinity of Dog Run. The remnants of the Diablo Regiment have withdrawn to the north, but the Imperial Infantry Regiment Havoc is still positioned in the disputed zone 20km to the east of Dog Run.

Pictured below are m1A2 tanks from 5th Tank Battalion advancing past several destroyed T-80 tanks and a Bradley IFV from 7th Mech Battalion.

Pictured here are M1A2s from 5th Tank Battalion destroying Imperial air defenses with direct fire.

The Hospital ship: CCS Good Will is off the coast, has been receiving some litter cases.
.
A UIN patrol boat is near by offering protection, but everytime the waves have white caps it has to motor into port. The 3 or 4 sailors do not like being in on a 16 ft outboard.
.
Helos come out with those needing medical attention. Most of the really difficult cases ROD is taking care of in their medical units. Some of the Evil soldiers have been returned to ROD security after being cared for.

This morning in the pre-dawn darkness, ground forces from the ROD and Mahishmati initiated an attack on the Evil Empireís Infantry Regiment Havoc located on Booger Mesa, about 25km west of Dog Run. The ROD 2nd Armored Brigade moved west from Dog Run with both tank battalions abreast in an apparent frontal attack. Havoc Regiment began to fire artillery to disrupt the brigadeís attack, but it was only a feint to draw havocís attention. The real attack came from the south from the Royal Mahishmati Armored brigade Ė a battalion each of M47 and M48 tanks, plus a mech battalion in M113 APCs.

A supporting attack came from the north, from the ROD 15th Parachute Infantry battalion, who had been dropped the previous evening and marched to their attack positions in the dark. The 15th infantry attacked Havocís rear to destroy command and control nodes, supply facilities, and direct support artillery.

Havocís tank battalion counter-attacked to the south and a fierce battle with the Mahishmati tanks ensued, resulting in a stalemate on the southern flank of the mesa. RODís Tank Force Eagle (7th Infantry Battalion with 2 mech companies and a tank company) was the operational reserve and reinforced the Mahishmati attack in the early afternoon.

Havoc, having lost much C2 and fire support, displaced to the west to alternate positions and tightened their perimeter, fending off several attacks in the process. The Mahishmati brigade consolidated its gains and is occupying hasty defensive positions tonight. ROD 2nd Armored Brigade displaced 10km to the west and is screening the north in the direction of the broken Diablo Regiment and is providing an operational reserve with its 2 tank battalions. The brigadeís DS artillery battalion is providing fire support and counter-battery fire with its 18 howitzers and 2 Q-36 radars.

In the air, the ROD 1st Fighter Wing and Mahishmati Air Force are keeping the skis clear of Imperial aircraft, while aircraft from the ROD carrier Armageddon are conducting air interdiction missions against Imperial ground targets in the disputed border zone, and also north of the border in Imperial territory.

Pictured here are paratroopers from A Company / 15th Infantry conducting an L-shaped ambush against an Imperial supply convoy.

Below are paratroopers from B Company / 15th Infantry conducting a raid against an Imperial battalion command post.

Below are paratroopers from C Company / 15th Infantry attacked a 2S1 howitzer battery I Havoc Regimentís rear area.

While the situation in Mahishmati remains tense, forces from the ROD, Mahishmati, and the Evil Empire have agreed to a temporary cease fire while the belligerents and the UIN discuss a permanent solution to the conflict.

Currently, the ROD hospital ship Asclepius, the support ship Bison, and the frigate Minotaur are steaming toward the Bay of Bengal to provide humanitarian support to the people of Mahishmati.
