Designed as a high-speed medium bomber, it was produced from 1941 to 1945, and served in both European and Pacific theaters. It suffered the fewest losses of any US Army aircraft and was nicknamed "widow maker" due to its high landing speed. A total of 5,288 were produced, with more than 500 serving with the Royal Air Force, South African Air Force, and Free French forces.
