Eight ships of the USN Knox class frigates transferred to the Taiwanese navy during the 1990’s. Two were expended as target ships in 2020. The remainder have been upgraded, receiving enhanced electronics, the strengthening of the flight deck to handle Seahawk helicopters, and point defense countermeasures. Air defense has been improved with the installation of ten boxed SM-1 surface-to-air missiles and associated fire control systems.
