Initiated in the 1980s, the A5 was an upgrade of the fleet of Leopard 1 tanks to match the threat of current Soviet models. This included improved fire-control, communications equipment, and enhanced ammunition. Although largely not in frontline service with NATO countries several hundred have been transferred to Ukraine.
