Commissioned in Aug. 1941, Duke of York was the third battleship of the King George V class. She participated in convoy escort duties and was flagship of Force H during the North African and Sicilian landings. Acting as part of a cover force for the Murmansk convoys on Dec. 26, 1943, she engaged and sank the German battlecruiser Scharnhorst in a 10-1/2 hr. running gunfight. Served with the Home Fleet until the end of European hostilities then transferred to the Pacific fleet but arrived too late to participate in combat. Decommissioned in 1951; scrapped in 1957.
